APPLICATIONS

Fiber optic products are used in a variety of applications.  The majority of fiber optic components are still used within the telecommunications industry but with the increased competition of systems, subsystems and fiber optic component suppliers, prices have lowered, lowering profits and margins.  This has forced fiber optic suppliers to look to the industries listed below in order to improve their bottom lines and capabilities.

Telecommunications - the telecommunication industry has widespread applications, ranging from global networks to desktop computers.  These involve the transimission of voice, data or video over distances of less than one meter to hundreds of kilometers.  Multinational firms need secure, reliable systems to transfer financial information and data transmission between computers and the buildings as well as transfer data around the world. Fibers are lighter than copper, which allows them to be easily transported to the cable lying site.  Fiber optic cables are much more difficult to tap than copper wire, so there is a security advantage as well.

Biomedical - fiber optic systems are used in most modern telemedicine devices for transmission of digital diagnostic light images.  This is mostly due to the competitive drive among companies who have been driving down the cost of fiber optic products.

Aerospace - with the addition of this industry into the fiber optic industry, fiber optic system developers have been able to to make great advancements in integrated and support-level systems by altering the characteristics of fibers in order to make them meet the appropriate weight and performance requirements.

Automotive - major automotive manufacturers like Chevrolet, Camaro and Cadillac have been using fiber optics for quite some time now to monitor exterior lighting.  Other applications that have arised are on-board safety devices and systems that require immediate response or rapid communication to and from the monitoring system and the device module.  With the right cost-effective components and the large bandwidth of fibers, more and more manufacturers are leaning towards fiber as their device's means of communication.
